Anambra 2025: How INEC and Police Promise Fair Elections and Support for People with Disabilities!

Stakeholders in the coming governorship election in Anambra State have assured of a level playing ground for all political parties and their candidates in the November 8 poll.

The stakeholders which include the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, heads of various security agencies in the state and the media, made the pledged during a live television discussion organized by TAF AFRICA; a non governmental organization, which is funded by the European Union.

The event which had the theme: stakeholders’ preparedness for a disability inclusive governorship election in Anambra State, also featured discussions on how people living with disabilities can be effectively included in the poll.

INEC which was represented by the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Dr Queen Elizabeth Agwu assured that Biometric Voters Accreditation System, BV will be deployed for the election, and that results will be uploaded real time without complaints of network failure.

She said: “We have done five elections in Anambra since I became the REC, we have had state assembly, senatorial, presidential elections. We have taken time to prepare. We have dotted Is and crossed Ts. Election is one thing that if not gotten right may lead to other things going wrong. As at today, everything is ready and we have gotten materials prepared.

“The materials involved for elections are sensitive, non sensitive materials and adhoc workers. We have gotten full consignment of non sensitive materials, booths, bags, inks, boxes and others, and they have been deployed to the various local governments.

“We have used BVAS in the last five elections we have conducted here and they have never failed, but we are keeping some (BVAS) on standby in case any fails. Results will be updated real time, there will be no hitches. We have always uploaded, even in 2023 when other states could not, we uploaded. I’m sure there will be no problem with BVAS and we will upload seamlessly. We will be dealing with more than one network, so there will be no problem of network failure.”

On the inclusivity of the election, Agwu said: “We are trying to be very inclusive and ensuring that persons with disabilities are part of the election. They are humans and should not be discriminated against in election matters, whether in voting or in working as adhoc staff, but there must be ready to work because this won’t be on grounds of compassion, but right.

“In this election, we have 16 political parties and none will get any favour from us. We want the election to count. We will not like Anambra people to sit in their houses and be playing ball, cooking food and at the end telling us that the election has been determined before hand.

“There have usually been low voter turn out, but we are calling them to have trust in us and to come out and vote. If you decide not to come out, you are giving opportunity for the wrong person to win. Under me, the election will be fair, don’t stay at home and say it has been done the way they usually do it.”

The public relations officers of Anambra State Police Command and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra, Messrs Tochukwu Ikenga and Edwin Okadigbo assured of the readiness of their operatives to secure all during the election, and ensure all-inclusive election in the state.

Okadigbo said: “We have had trainings for our personnel on how to use assistive tools for people with disabilities and we will be sure to help them to ensure that the forthcoming election is truly inclusive.”

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of TAF AFRICA, Jake Epele said the discussion was important so as to ascertain the level of preparedness of all stakeholders involved in the conduct of the election.

He assured that the group which is supported by European Union will continue to rally stakeholders.

Defections: Tinubu’s one-party state agenda gradually coming into reality - ADC

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, says the recent defections of the governors of Enugu and Bayelsa States to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, confirm its long-held warning that President Bola Tinubu is determined to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party described the defections as a betrayal of the people and a dangerous sign for Nigeria’s democracy.

Abdullahi said that while the defections might appear to strengthen the APC, they in fact represent a loss for democracy and a deliberate effort by the ruling party to weaken the opposition and consolidate unchecked power.

“The recent defections by the governors of Enugu and Bayelsa States to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, validate the African Democratic Congress, ADC’s long-standing warning that President Bola Tinubu is determined to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, no matter the cost to democracy or national stability,” Abdullahi said.

The ADC alleged that the defected governors abandoned their citizens and aligned with a government that has, in its words, made life ‘miserable’ for the majority of Nigerians.

According to the party, Nigerians were already experiencing the daily failures of the APC government, citing insecurity, economic hardship, and poor social welfare as evidence of misgovernance.

It further stated that the Tinubu’s administration had failed in all major areas of governance, including insecurity, economic management, healthcare, anti-corruption, and foreign policy.

“Every day, Nigerians are paying the price for these failures. Food prices continue to increase, jobs are non-existent, and insecurity continues to choke every part of the country,” the ADC stated.

Governor Mbah coerced into joining APC - PDP spokesman Ologunagba

The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Debo Ologunagba, has alleged that the defection of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, was due to intimidation.

Ologunagba made the allegation on Wednesday during an interview on The Morning Brief, a programme on Channels Television, monitored by DAILY POST.

Recall that Governor Mbah, on October 14, announced his move from PDP to APC, citing neglect of the South-East by the party.

Ologunagba also alleged that the defection of key members of PDP to APC is the result of external pressure from the ruling party.

“This defection is not based on conviction, or some other programmes of the APC that is attractive; it is induced by personal considerations, intimidation, coercion, and threats.

“The fact is that there is a deliberate action by the government, and the president has said openly that he will wish to have a one-party state,” he said.

The spokesman described the PDP as a broad-based party with people-oriented policies and programmes, noting that it is focused on its forthcoming national convention in Oyo State.

Ologunagba pointed out that the records of his party, under its 16 years of governance, can secure it more elected positions in the 2027 elections.

He accused some members of PDP of undermining the party, adding that such issues would be addressed.
